Sweet Summer Lovin & Salads.

Ken and I are trying to eat a mostly veggie lifestyle.  Both of us, at different times in our lives (mainly college), were vegetarian and now for spiritual and health reasons we are trying to make it a staple of our lives.

Honestly, it is pretty easy for us.  It gets even easier when Mark Bittman’s around.  Here are 101 salads for our summer dinners.  We will try each one (even those, that don’t sound that good — for example, I’m not a big fan of sweet & salty together). However, I’m putting my stereotypes aside and giving it a go.  I’ll keep you updated on our progress.

Great Gratitude Batman!

It’s Friday and I’ve got a lot to be grateful for.  Enjoy your weekend.

I have several friends who will be getting these morse code necklaces from Coatt. Each necklace spells out a sweet phrase or word like “your name” or “lucky”.   I saw these necklaces on one of my favorite blogs “A Cup Of Joe.

We have been working on organizing and cleaning our house, mainly just getting some of the final finishes on each room (new sofa, new carpet, etc.).  So we need a cozy fall recipe weekend meal to eat while we work? Answer:  French Onion Soup in a Crock Pot.

A few helpful hints from the Gourmet Gallery:

Use at least 4 (yes F-O-U-R) types of onions:  Yellow, White, Red, Sweet Vidalia, and Shallot.

Nothing caramelizes onions better than your trusty Le Creuset. It’s a must.

Resist the urge to add the liquid too early - let those babies cook!

Finally, Quantity. You’ll want about 6 pounds of onions total. More depending on how much you’re making, but for a good ol’ big pot of soup 6 pounds should do it.

Thank you Gallery Gourmet!  Will let you know how it turns out.  Happy Autumn.

falling for beer

I am a finicky beer drinker.  Surrounded by friends and a boyfriend who are mad about breweries, I’ve always been pretty particular about what I like.  I like light beers — not too hoppy or dark.  So fall is when beer comes alive for me.  Something about the changing leaves and a nutty beer that make me desperate for friends and fun.  Below are a few of my favorite fall beers to get you in the mood.

Please feel free to share your favorite in the comments.

A.  Brewery: Dog Fish Head / Flavor: Raison D’Etre

B.  Brewery: Eysian Brewing Company / Flavor: Night Owl Pumpkin Ale

C.  Brewery: Sam Adams / Flavor: Harvest Pumpkin Ale (I know, maybe not the most fashionable fall beer, but it is cheap and has a nice honey brown flavor)

D.  Brewery: Bosteels Brewery / Flavor: Tripel Karmeliet (Honestly, it was one of the best beers I have EVER had.  Rumor has it, Karmeliet won “Best Beer in the World” in 2008)
